Engr. Abimbola Akinajo is a Chartered Civil Engineer (both in the UK and Nigeria) with over three decades post qualification experience, gained in the design and delivery of major transport (both Rail and Road) infrastructure projects.

She attended Holy Child College, Lagos for her secondary education and later University of Lagos, Nigeria, where she earned a B.Sc. (Hons) in Civil Engineering, Nigeria. Following a successful completion of her degree, she proceeded to the United Kingdom, where she started her engineering career.

She worked at WS Atkins Consulting in the UK as a Graduate Engineer and moved on to be a Project Engineer with Robert West Consulting, a Design Manager with Fluor Daniel Limited, and finally a Project Manager with London Underground Limited working on railway infrastructure projects for over 20 years. At London Underground, she delivered many high-profile rail infrastructure projects, including:

• Upgrading the Blackfriars station for the Thames Link project,

• The East London Line project handover, and

• London Overground interface project, among others.

In 2010, she became the Managing Director of Nexant Consulting Limited and grew the consulting firm into a reputable, quality-driven consulting firm with an excellent record with its clients.

Engr. Mrs. Akinajo is a Fellow of the Nigeria Society of Engineers (FNSE), a member Institution of Civil Engineers UK (MICE), and Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN).

She was appointed the Managing Director of LAMATA in October 2019, and in a little over six years of her appointment, she has delivered life-impacting transport projects which have accentuated Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s first pillar of the THEMES+ agenda – Traffic Management and Transportation.

These include the completion of the infrastructure and operationalization of the Oshodi – Abule-Egba Bus Rapid Transit, implementation and launch of the First and Last Mile bus scheme, completion of the first phase of the Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) Blue Line project from Marina to Mile 2 spanning 13 km and its passenger operation, the implementation of the Red Line Rail project, from Agbado to Oyingbo, which infrastructure were completed and launched in February 2024. The Red Line passenger operation commenced in October 15, 2024.

Mrs. Akinajo is currently engaging with the Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MOFI) for the development of the 68-kilometre Green Line from Marina to Lekki Free Zone, for which a Memorandum of Understanding was signed in China recently. She is also engaging with the African Development Bank (AfDB) for investment in the implementation of the 60-kilometer Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) Purple Line from Redemption Camp in Ogun State to Volkswagen along the Lagos Badagry Expressway.

Under her watch, LAMATA implemented the First and Last Mile Bus Scheme, a key part of the Bus Reform Initiative (BRI). It is a modular concept to enhance passengers’ connectivity and accessibility to all BRT, Standard routes, waterways, and the proposed Rail corridor in Lagos. The FLM routes are considered community-based and were formerly mainly served by unsafe tricycles and motorcycles.

As part of contributions to emission reduction and making Lagos’ transport system rolling stock multi-fuel, Engr. Akinajo is leading the initiative for the use of biogas in the operation of public transport rolling stock.
